What a Summer!
This year’s summer camp was a blast! This year was our largest turnout yet of both campers and volunteers. Many students were excited to see familiar faces from last year among the volunteers, which is a testament to the power of the relationships they form throughout the summer. It was also great to meet and to get to know many new volunteers and campers this year.
As always, we integrated reading and writing time throughout each day to keep students’ minds fresh and ready to go when school starts back up in the fall. We also threw in a lot of fun activities, such as visits from Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Houston Aquarium. These activities are engaging and keep students learning, while also being super exciting. With all that excitement, the campers are bound to get hungry, right? Well, we can assure you they were well fed thanks to our friends at Bob’s Taco Station and Lunches of Love.
We did hit a snag halfway through camp, along with the rest of Houston. Beryl knocked us out for week three but couldn’t keep us down long. We were back up and running for week four. On the last day of camp, we finally tallied up all of the points earned over the summer, and the Astros team narrowly beat the Rockets and the Texans for our Summer Reading Camp Cup. It was an exciting day for sure, especially since they have now won two years in a row!
This year’s camp flew by, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the continued support from the community and our volunteers. Without them, none of this would be possible. This camp truly makes a difference in the lives of our students, and we are counting down the days until next summer!
